Itching, burning or other complaints in the intimate area are often caused by a lack of care. However, too much care is just as harmful to your intimate area as too little. Your intimate area is characterised by an acidic milleu, which ensures that bacteria are prevented from spreading in this region. They are therefore unable to survive, so the vaginal flora protects against infections. The vaginal flora is made up of numerous lactic acid bacteria and other important microorganisms. These form the natural acid mantle in the intimate area. In order not to destroy this sensitive protective barrier, you should use predominantly mild care for your intimate area. Many soaps and shower gels usually have a pH value that is too high. They cleanse too aggressively and therefore damage the vaginal flora. Without the acidic milleu in the intimate area, bacteria are able to survive and multiply, which can lead to dehydration and irritation of the mucous membranes and even to vaginal yeast infections.

Is a special intimate hygiene product necessary?

Theoretically, cleansing the intimate area with water would be sufficient due to the self-protective function of the vaginal flora. However, dermatologically tested intimate care products provide additional support for the vaginal flora and also ensure a pleasant feeling of freshness. The specifically developed care products maintain the natural protective barrier of the intimate area and thus prevent many unpleasant infections.

How often should you care for your intimate area?

Adequate care is important, but you shouldn't overdo it when cleaning your intimate area in order to protect your acid mantle. You should also only clean the outer area, the vulva, as the inside of the vagina has its own ecosystem that regenerates itself. During your period, you should not only use the right care product, but also replace pads, tampons, etc. regularly. The heat generated can cause bacteria to multiply despite appropriate cleansing and can lead to an intimate illness. If you are already suffering from an infection due to incorrect intimate hygiene, the acidic milleu should be restored, and the right care products can help. You should refrain from using conventional shower gels or soaps to restore the vaginal flora, as these would further support the infection. Due to the anatomical conditions, the skin in the intimate area is particularly sensitive and the risk of infection is correspondingly higher than on the skin of the rest of the body. This is why intimate care with a suitable intimate care product is particularly important.
